"When the sweet corn is germinating and reaches
2 to 4 inches high, the crows yank it out of the ground and consume the
remaining seed." They go up and down the rows, beginning at the end of
April and continuing for nine weeks of successive plantings, catching the
different maturities week after week.

Birds love his "Confection" variety of sweet corn,
which grows up through the top of the husk, so it's easier for birds to
peck at the tip. While the nibbling doesn't destroy the rest of the ear,
it devastates the marketability. "When people pay retail, they want perfect
corn. Visual appeal - that's the reality of my marketplace." The damage
can happen overnight. "Just before dusk, huge flocks of starlings, grackles
and red-wing blackbirds swarm and peck the tip kernels. I lose money."
Birds leave treated areas for better food sources -- long-term - they can't habituate. Environmentally safe product is EPA reduced risk, developed with USDA assistance and FDA Generally Recognized As Safe. Made from a bitter tasting, smelly component of concord grapes (active ingredient methyl anthranilate).

than one week prior to harvest of sweet corn).
